DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The City of Daytona Beach has $305,000 worth of new golf carts at its municipal golf course. Daytona Beach Golf Club Director John Cameron tells FOX 35 the carts they replaced were simply over worked and failing.

"They were getting worn out, getting to a point where they needed a lot of repair, and just customers are looking for a new cart a new ride."

In particular, the costs to charge and replace the batteries was getting too high. Cameron says he is getting a lot of feedback from golfers on the new carts.

"People were really happy that we were proactive, didn't wait too long like we did last time, and we're ahead of the game. They're appreciative that we're giving them a nice cart."

Buying $305,000 worth of carts turns out to be right around $2,500 for each cart. Cameron says that is a reasonable price.

"The original purchase price was over $3,500. With our trade in, it netted it down to the $2,500 you cite," says Cameron.   "Over the three years we are going to have this fleet, hopefully, we'll generate close to $2 million in revenue."

We asked Cameron how the carts could only last three years when they are brand new.

"They're driven outside. They're charged nightly. There's acid in the batteries. They're driven over terrain. Uh yes, three years is pretty good."

The carts do have features that drove up the cost, including windshields, roofs, and even zip up golf bag protectors. Each feature is designed to make the customer experience better, and keep them on the course longer. Rain costs the city and course money if they have to issue a rain check, but if the customer waits out a storm because they can wait in the protected cart, that is supposed to save the city money.
