Phoenix 2024? City gets invitation to bid on summer Olympics

PHOENIX -

Phoenix has hosted some pretty big events. We've hosted the Super Bowl a couple of times, but can you image hosting something on a much larger scale -- like the summer Olympics?

There were cheers and dancing after Rio de Janeiro was selected for the 2016 Olympics. Could we be celebrating like this if Phoenix is awarded the 2024 Olympics?

"That would be phenomenal, I would love it. I'm a native I would love to see that," said Walida Hicks.

"I think it's too hot, literally too hot for the Olympics," said Maggie Orourk.

Well right now the US Olympic Committee is gauging interest from 35 cities across the country, including Phoenix. Also on the list -- New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and Dallas, as well as smaller places like Memphis and Tulsa.

They sent out this letter to get the ball rolling in interested cities about "possible bid themes."

Make no mistake -- hosting the games is very expensive. The operating budget is more than $3 billion, and that doesn't include the cost of building any new venues.

"There'd have to be a lot of indoor venues," said valley resident Jim Demetros.

Here are just a few of the requirements:

You need 45,000 hotel rooms. You need an Olympic village that sleeps more than 16,000 people and has a 5,000 person dining hall. You also have to have an operations center that holds 15,000 members of the media.

You also need an international airport that can handle thousands of international travelers per day.

Though some have concerns about the triple digit heat, overall, most couldn't help but smile at the thought of that Olympic torch here in the valley.

"That'd be awesome just like the Super Bowl or any other great thing, we're probably one of the greatest cities in the nation," said Eddie Jasso.

Even though it's a nice thought, again, this is in the very early stages. The US Olympic Committee still has a couple years to decide whether it even wants to submit a bid for the 2024 games.
