SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Hundreds of Trayvon Martin supporters paid tribute to the teenager at Fort Mellon Park in Sanford. Martin's parents were in New York for a separate vigil. The candlelight vigil in Sanford was for the community in Central Florida.
Through singing and praising, nearly 300 people turned out on Tuesday evening to remember the 17 year old who was shot and killed one year ago.
"I think this was so necessary for them to even realize that holistically there's a problem here," said Monica May, radio personality from Star Orlando's 94.5 FM. "I think that they're ready to heal and move forward."
Those here brought their hoodies and memories. People of all colors went to the vigil, because those here said the shooting affected all of them.
"This touches everybody," said Luevern Tillman, a lifelong resident of Sanford. "I see all the different races out here which is good, because it's a part of our history. Sanford, we gotta do a little bit better."
After quick remarks and prayers, participants lit candles at the same moment people around the world did the same: 7:15 p.m., the moment Martin was believed to have been killed.
A group of community leaders also met with members from the Department of Justice Community Relations team to try to figure out more ways to help those who live in Sanford.
