LA Times: Phoenix will be unlivable due to heat

Posted: Updated:

Is record heat going to make Phoenix unlivable, forcing people to flee the valley in droves?

In an opinion piece in Thursday's newspaper, William DeBuys, a guest writer for the LA Times, says climate change will make things so unlivable in the valley that people will have no choice but to leave.

The hot summers will get hotter, the dust storms will be more violent and our water supply will dwindle and dry up.

Here are some excerpts from how the editorial describes Phoenix's future:

"If cities were stocks, you'd want to short Phoenix."

That one hurts, but he wasn't done.  He goes on to write that we are so reliant on air conditioning, "if the power goes out, people fry."

And he says valley politics will complicate issues.

"Don't be surprised if the drivers steering the UHauls out of town are spurred along as much by discord as by drought."

The editorial paints a pretty bleak future of life here in Phoenix, so we went to Camelback Ranch -- spring training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and asked LA natives who moved to the valley what they thought of the opinion in their hometown newspaper -- and what they thought about living here in the valley as opposed to L.A.

"..not as many people.  The bad part about it..the heat, but it's only four months out of the year, but the rest is beautiful," said Denise Martinez.  "It's the desert, it's a chance I'm willing to take."

"The housing is cheaper," said Hector Preciado.  " one thing it's less crowded."

Matt Rados adds, "We still go back there a few times a year.  I mean it's overcrowded, we don't need to say anything about that..not as bad out here."

"Eventually when we get to retirement, we plan on moving to Arizona because the cost of living..cheaper..we like the weather," said Sean Tauscher. "It's a little hot in the summer, hey winter time is perfect.  I'd rather take the heat than going broke back home in California."
