PHOENIX -

A 43-year-old driver has been arrested after fleeing the scene of a collision that killed a passenger who was naked and had lain down in the road.

According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos, about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, a female pedestrian entered the roadway at 34th Street and Thomas and began to remove her clothing.

She then laid down in the roadway, in an apparent suicide attempt, and was subsequently struck by a 2010 Toyota Yaris, traveling eastbound.

The driver of the Toyota stopped near the scene and stood by, watching the activity, without rendering aid to the victim, Martos said. When police arrived, the driver fled the scene in the Toyota without identifying herself as being involved in the collision.

A citizen and an officer performed CPR on the victim, but she later died at a hospital.

Police later located the Toyota and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, Aimee Butel, 43, allegedly showed signs of impairment and was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on charges of DUI and leaving the scene of a fatal collision.

The victim's name hasn't been released.
