Saving money at the grocery store

ATLANTA -

Going to the grocery store is probably just one more thing on your to-do list. Grocers, on the other hand,  take your each and every visit very seriously. The sales, even the lay out of the store, are designed to get you to buy more.

How many times have you gone to get groceries and spent a lot more than you planned to spend?  Well, it's no accident.  Grocery store management has one big goal -- to get you to buy. So, they do things to help you along a little bit.

Do you go for the 10 for $10 or two for one deals all of the time? It's not a deal if you get 10 and eight of whatever it is goes bad before you can eat them. The discount applies if you get one or five -- just get what you need.

Does your cart matter? Market research shows the bigger the cart the more you buy. Some stores offer smaller sizes, so use them.

Buying a bunch of carrots or a head of lettuce is cheaper than buying the pre-chopped bags. Consumer Reports says the convenient bags can cost five times more.  And buying in bulk is not always cheaper.  Be sure to check the unit price, it can be a trick to get you to buy a big supply of something when all you need is one package.

Finally, we've all walked into the store to find everything has been moved around. Grocers do that on purpose.  We get into habits by going directly to the spots where we get our regular items.  When they mix it up, you are forced to look around a bit and perhaps see new items and buy them.

If you want to stick firmly to a budget, learn the new lay out quickly.

Prosecutors considered him their key witness, a longtime Gwinnett developer given immunity to spill what he knew about corruption inside county government. David Jenkins testified before a Gwinnett grand jury in 2010. He also met multiple times with prosecutors. Those interviews were videotaped. Four years later, prosecutors agreed to a no contest plea bargain with former commissioner Kevin Kenerly on one count of bribery. He will serve 10 years on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
