One suspect killed, one outstanding in Buckeye bank robbery

BUCKEYE, Ariz. -

Buckeye Police officers were involved in a shootout that killed a suspect and left a police canine wounded Tuesday evening -- and a second suspect is outstanding.

Detectives say two men were wanted for robbing a Bank of America in Buckeye. Officers tried to take one of the suspects down in the area of 221st Ave and Van Buren, but he did not comply.

They shot two rounds of a bean bag gun at the suspect, but he didn't stop. Then, they let loose their police K-9.

One of the suspects pulled out a weapon, and officers fired multiple rounds upon him -- and unfortunately, the K-9 got in the way of one of the bullets. The dog was hit in the back but is expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect was wounded and later died at a hospital. The second suspect apparently fled into the desert and the search continues.

DPS has assumed the investigation, and the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard procedure.

FOX 10's Anita Roman talked to people living in the area.
