The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation following a house fire which claimed the life of one man and his four dogs.
Volusia County Fire Services and the New Smyrna Beach Fire & Rescue Department responded to the fully involved fire at a mobile home at 2056 Porto Blvd. near New Smyrna Beach Wednesday morning at around 11 a.m.
The victim, who has not been identified, was confined to a motorized wheelchair. The cause of the fire is not yet known, and officials can not say if the man's disability prevented him from escaping the fire.
Jermaine Lambert and her neighbors rushed to try and get help before the home became engulfed in flames.
"I told them to hurry up! I was getting nervous," said Lambert.
Neighbors knew the family had dogs inside, so they did what they could do to try and get those animals out -- kicking in doors and breaking windows.
"We got a chair and busted the two window out and there was nothing. We screamed and nothing," said neighbor Aaron Buchanan.
An autopsy will be conducted by the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office to determine the official cause of death.
