Pedestrian crossing street hit by car in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. -

A pedestrian was taken to the hospital and later died after being hit by a car while crossing the street.

It happened about 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Apache Blvd, west of McClintock Drive.

Authorities say the victim was crossing Apache from north to south in the middle of the block when he was hit by a car heading eastbound.

The victim is a male of unknown age. He does not appear to be a student.

The driver stayed at the scene. Impairment is not believed to be a factor.

Eastbound Apache Blvd will be closed for several hours while officers investigate.
