SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

It was one year ago that George Zimmerman was arrested for shooting and killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford.  Zimmerman was charged with second degree murder, but Zimmerman's mother is speaking out, saying it was an act of self defense, and he shouldn't have been arrested.

Gladys Zimmerman says she's ready for this case to go to trial, adding that the truth will come out and her son will be acquitted.  She says April 11, 2012 will forever be the day that the justice system failed Americans.  She released a letter while still in hiding, but wanted to thank the people who support her.

We met in person, but because of security issues, she didn't want to talk on camera. Her son, Robert Zimmerman Jr. spoke on her behalf.  "I think it was important to put her thoughts into words," he says.

Gladys says it was healing to share her thoughts, especially regarding misinformation about her son. She wrote, "By confusing the public and manipulating perception in order to sway the court of public opinion, Benjamin Crump and company finally achieved their first base victory."  Crump is the Martin's family attorney. "Ben Crump made many assertions as fact, that they would have no way of knowing was fact. George took a life to save a life of his own, but that's not an act of murder. There is nothing that amounts to murder in any of that evidence that comes to light."

Crump released a statement on behalf of Trayvon Martin's parents:

"One year ago today, the State of Florida decided that there was evidence to charge George Zimmerman for second-degree murder for profiling, pursuing, and killing our unarmed teenage son.

"The facts of this case are simple and straightforward. We are confident that a jury following the overwhelming evidence against George Zimmerman will hold him accountable for killing our son, Trayvon Martin.

"For the Zimmerman family to allege that the justice system doesn't work, simply because they are unhappy their son was arrested in the first place, is disingenuous and disrespectful to the very system that is currently affording him every available opportunity to defend himself.

"The arrest of an admitted killer is not a violation of due process, it is due process. Most will agree that no one has been given greater consideration by the justice system for killing an unarmed child, than George Zimmerman.

"We continue to pray that our son's death will serve as a catalyst in preventing other senseless acts of gun violence."

But Gladys believes the truth will come out when the evidence is presented. Robert Zimmerman Jr agrees. "I hope that when we come to the revelation of the truth, that people are just incensed with the people who deceived them for over a year, as to what happened Feb. 26th."

Meanwhile, the Zimmerman family hopes to live a more normal life, once the case is over. "Get out of town, start some kind of life far from Florida."

Gladys Zimmerman hopes people stay focused on the truth. The trial is set for June 10.
