DEBARY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A DeBary surfer suffers from the first shark bite of the season.  A spokesperson for Volusia Co. Beach Patrol said the attack happened near the Inlet off New Smyrna Beach.

"It felt kind of like a big dog was biting me," said Joshua White, 21.

White said he was paddling out to surf on Saturday around 1:30 p.m. when a bull shark latched on to his hand.

"He shook his head left and to the right about two to three times," said White. "Then he tried to re-grip on it. Once he tried to re-grip I was able to pull my hand out of his mouth."

White then paddled back to shore using his one good hand. Two strangers rushed to help him. One of the men flagged down beach patrol. White was taken to the hospital. He needed 29 stitches.

"I was more annoyed than anything just because I was supposed to bartend a wedding that night," said White.

He'll be off his board for six weeks.

"It sucks," he said. "I never sit down for more than an hour."

Doctors said White suffered some tendon damage, but a bite can't keep a good surfer down.

"Immediately, I just knew not to panic," said White.

He said he learned that lesson in 2011 after a shark bit his dad while he was surfing in April of that year.

"After he was bit, we all were kind of stunned," said White. "And then now I'm bit so he just kind of laughs it off with me. We're just keeping it in the family."

Both men vow to keep surfing, but plan to change one thing.

"I probably won't go on certain days," said White. "I probably won't surf in April."

White is expected to make a full recovery.  He told FOX 35 he will be ready to surf this summer.
