Endangered crocodiles arrive at Phoenix Herpetological Society

PHOENIX -

There are a couple of new girls in town and while both have appealing smiles, you may want to keep your distance.

These ladies are the newest addition to the Phoenix Herpetological Society.

"These are Orinoco crocodiles.  They're from South America.  Their population has been diminished greatly, so we're real thrilled to have these.  I think there's only maybe a half a dozen places in the country that has these on exhibit," said Phoenix HERP's Russ Johnson.

The crocodiles just arrived in the valley from the Lone Star state.

"We got them from the Dallas World Aquarium.  They actually are doing a breeding project where they're reintroducing the young back into the wild," said Johnson.  "These are some they deemed that are not releasable and so they sent us a pair of these two girls here."

These two girls seem to be adjusting to their new digs -- no problem.

"We let them out yesterday.  They stopped dead in their tracks.. just laid in the sun and thought it was great. They weren't sure what they were seeing," said Johnson.

There's good reason these two sisters like catching a few rays.  Born in March 2008, the pair was raised indoors until now.

"This is the first time these two crocodiles have ever been in the sun," said Johnson. "They are really loving life now."

What's not to love?  Along with the sun, the sisters have grass, a pond and plenty of room for a couple of six foot long blonds to hang out, relax and draw crowds.

"They're actually a very beautiful crocodile compared to the others.  They're very pale, almost blond looking compared to the rest, so it's not something you're going to see very often," explained Johnson.

To see the crocodiles, you need to contact the Phoenix Herpetological Society and arrange a tour.
