DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

There was brief scare shortly before noon on Monday, when two Volusia County sheriff's deputies discovered a suspicious envelope.   They were checking mail coming into the S. James Foxman Justice Center in Daytona Beach, located at 251 Ridgewood Ave, when they came across an letter covered in a powdery substance.

The deputies immediately bagged it and brought it outside near the dumpster and some garbage cans.  Fire department and hazardous materials teams geared up to investigate.

"We completed all the tests for our radiological and biological, and so far, all our tests have come back negative.  It was a letter.  No powdery substance inside the letter.  It was a letter to a specific judge," said Daytona Beach Fire Department Lt. Larry Stoney.

The intended recipient was Circuit Judge R. Michael Hutcheson.   There is no word yet on what the letter said.

"We stay in contact with the FBI and joint terrorism task force here in Volusia County," said Hazmat Battalion Cmdr. Nick Castelli.   "We contact them, tell them what we have and tell that it is deemed credible.  Then we run it through a bunch of tests."

Cmdr. Castelli said that, because the letter did not appear to have any dangerous substances, both deputies were able to go back to work and business continued at the justice center.
