PHOENIX -

Phoenix Police officers took an injured check forgery suspect to the hospital Tuesday night after a dangerous chase on city streets and the I-17.

Police responded to a check-cashing business near 19th Ave and Bell about 6:30 p.m. on a forgery call. When they arrived, 37-year-old Aaron Jacob Dias allegedly ran from police and tried unsuccessfully to steal a car.

From there, Dias tried to steal a truck, and held the female driver at gunpoint, police say. She refused to get out of the vehicle because her grandchildren were inside. The officers saw him holding her at gunpoint, and fired upon him. The suspect fell out of the truck, but wasn't hit by gunfire.

The woman and her grandchildren got out safely, and the suspect climbed back into the truck and took off.

Police say Dias got on the I-17 heading the wrong direction, and later exited onto Cactus. There, the chase finally came to an end when he crashed into at a Circle K gas station at 19th Ave and Cactus.

The suspect narrowly avoided hitting people who were filling up their cars. Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes said the suspect was intentionally trying to hit people with the truck.

No one was hurt besides the suspect. He was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to the hospital. Wednesday night, Dias was booked into the 4th Ave Jail on charges including armed robbery and endangerment.
