Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused severe flooding in portions of the tristate region.

The morning commute was a tough one for many travelers who encountered flooded roadways.

From Tonnelle Ave. in North Bergen, New Jersey to the West Side Highway, some roads were impassible.

Video submitted to MyFoxNY.com showed extensive flooding along the approach to the Lincoln Tunnel on Route 492 in New Jersey.

A Flash Flood Warning was is in effect for Manhattan, Staten Island and Brooklyn; and Hudson County in New Jersey.

More than two inches of rain had fallen in New York City by 9 a.m.  Heavy downpours were expected on and off throughout the day.

A photo taken in Hoboken and Tweeted to @MyFoxNY showed water rising at 3rd and Clinton Streets.

Drivers are advised to take precautions in flooded areas.

Do not drive a vehicle into water that covers the roadway.

Move to higher ground if needed.
