GOODYEAR, Ariz. -

Police say a man attempted to abduct a 12-year-old girl walking to school Friday morning.

According to Goodyear police, the girl was walking near 17777 W. Westar Drive around 7:45 a.m. when a man drove up in a van, asked her if she needed a ride and grabbed her arm.

The 7th grader tore away from him and ran to nearby Westar Elementary School where she alerted school officials.

Police say the suspect is described as white man in his early 50's with blonde-gray hair, a mustache and goatee.

He was reportedly driving a white "box style" van made in the late 80's/early 90's. Right after it happened, a teacher was standing outside at the crosswalk and was able to get a partial license plate number.

The school was placed on lockdown temporarily and officials sent an email out to parents.

Parent Julie Rewerts took her daughter out of school early.

"A little scared she walks to school by herself... things like that never happen around here," said Rewerts.

Parent Stephanie McDaniels plans to have a long talk with her son about stranger danger.

"It makes me worried because I live in a good area and it just reminds you that it could happen to anybody, anywhere," said McDaniels.

If you have any information on the identity of the suspect, call Goodyear Police.
