Sinkhole closes Scottsdale Road north of 202

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Scottsdale Road north of the 202 is shut down due to a sinkhole at Scottsdale and Curry Roads.

According to Tempe Police, a water main break created a sinkhole in the middle lane of Scottsdale Road heading northbound, just north of the Loop 202.

The sinkhole is about 6 feet by 6 feet.

"We thought it was just a small leak but we saw in the middle of the road, water everywhere," says Jobani Olivares. "When I stopped and looked at it there was a small amount in the hole, but all of a sudden just 5-10 minutes later a little bigger, bigger and bigger."

The roadway is expected to be shut down until Tuesday while crews attempt to repair the water line, fill in the hole, and repave.

Only one northbound lane was open Friday night, causing a big traffic backup to commuters.

It's not just traffic that's affected by the closure. A nearby Jack in the Box had to close because it didn't have water. As of 6 p.m. Friday, water service to the area has been restored.

The city is calling it a "natural" water main break, which means aging likely played a role.
