Friends create petition for 'Travis Alexander law'

Posted: Updated:

An effort to create a Travis Alexander law is underway.

The murder victim's friends are going online to try to create a law to prevent murder victim's names from being dragged through the mud.

The petition is to Attorney General Eric Holder.

The goal is to stop suspected killers from making outrageous claims about a victim who's not there to defend themselves.

But one attorney says it will never become law.

Friends of Travis Alexander's say Jodi Arias made countless unsubstantiated claims about him in court. The most egregious, they say, when she claimed he was a pedophile.

This is what she said about it during an exclusive interview with FOX 10 anchor Troy Hayden:

"I would have been very happy to remain silent and go quietly in the night off to prison. My defense team decided to rip the lid off because we were forced to trial, the state didn't want to settle."

Travis' supporters have taken to the Internet, starting a petition at to create Travis Alexander's law, aimed to stop allowing highly prejudicial claims against murder victims without evidence.

Travis' friend, Dave Hall, signed it saying victims have the right to a fair trial too.

"I hope that they somehow raise the bar or increase the filter on what can be said about a victim that has been murdered and cannot testify on their own behalf when there is nothing to substantiate the claims," said Hall.

"I cannot see that the way the petition is written that it will ever pass because you cannot simply tie someone's hands and tell them they cannot testify to something they claim happened with them and another person," said attorney Monica Lindstrom.

Lindstrom says there's nothing to keep a defendant from telling a lie. People just have to believe the jury will get it right.

"We essentially put our faith in the jurors to judge the credibility of the witness and to determine whether that evidence is true or not," said Lindstrom. "They realized what she said wasn't true."

Someone started the petition March 20 and it now has more than 13,000 signatures.

It's just a petition, but some can get so many signatures it pressures politicians into taking action.
