DETROIT (WJBK) -

You would think 13 shootings in 24 hours would be worth a mention at a police press conference, but DPD brass seemed to see it differently.

The department spokesperson shut down the news conference after reporters refused to ignore the elephant in the room. 13 people were shot in Detroit in just 24 hours, five from one block, including a woman who was just hours away from a kidney transplant. She did not survive.

Detroit police were willing to ask for tips to solve that crime and highlight the fact that detectives tracked down the suspect in the now infamous attack at a Detroit gas station. But asking for overall numbers was somehow off topic.

Detroit Police Commission Chairman Rev. Jerome Warfield said that is something he wants to change.

"Part of community policing is to arm the community with as much information as you can give them in order [that] they may look out for you," he said. "If these type of activities are going on, then the community can coalesce and come together and then be able to help the police in their job."

Transparency isn't a new issue for DPD. Even the commission was having a hard time convincing the department to fork over the numbers on how much the department is spending and what they are spending it on, and the commission approves the budget.

Bottom line, as Chief Logan makes his exit and Chief Craig takes the reins, Warfield is confident that Detroiters will see some big changes.

"Transparency is an issue for him, making sure that he's engaged... because he cares a great deal about community policing," he said.

Hour after the press conference, DPD did release a statement. It said, in part, there have been 115 homicides in Detroit since the beginning of the year and 375 non-fatal shootings.
