It's been five days since a powerful macro burst swept through a north Phoenix neighborhood leaving behind a ton of damage. And for some residents in the area they are still cleaning up, others haven't even had a chance to survey the damage to their homes because they're out of town.

MESA, Ariz. -

Some elementary students in Mesa are learning a new lesson when it comes to engineering, and it's all thanks to a generous donation.

These young engineers are fifth graders at Highland Elementary. They are creating a knee brace.

They have the model and the tools, but they have to figure out how to make it with no instructions.

"At first I wasn't sure what we would be doing but I think I really do like it, get to try new things and be creative," says student Andrea Judd.

This is Dr. Millar Haskell's class. They are using a new program called Engineering is Elementary. The goal is to increase students' interest and their confidence about engineering.

"It's really cool because the kids can do it hands-on instead of a math test, where you keep writing, writing, writing," says student Chase Harris.

The Boeing Company gave the Mesa Public School District a grant allowing thousands of students to take the class.

"The goal is also to have teachers and students learn more about engineering and technology and understand it better," says Mary Baldwin of Boeing Company.

And the students seem to enjoy it. They are coming up with all different kinds of ideas.

After all, these kids could grow up to be engineers and work for Boeing.

The program is being used in other classrooms across the country as well.
