D'backs, Dodgers brawl has fans, players talking

PHOENIX -

Tuesday night’s on-field fight has sports fans across the country talking. There was a bench-clearing brawl at Dodger Stadium after Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke hit D'backs catcher Miguel Montero in the seventh inning.

Then in the bottom of the inning -- D'backs pitcher Ian Kennedy threw at Greinke. Kennedy denied throwing at Greinke's head on purpose in a post-game interview.

Kennedy and five other players and coaches were ejected including Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire.

We spoke to young, local players about the brawl at the Arizona World of Baseball Wednesday afternoon.

Everyone is talking about this brawl, but especially guys who play the sport. Players I talked to admitted that they found it exciting, but a little disheartening, especially because at Dodger Stadium the D’backs were outnumbered 72 to 25.

“It was kind of upsetting to see how people jumped in during the fight and the brawl,” says college baseball infielder Will Schommer.

Schommer is an infielder at Austin College in Texas. He doesn't see big fights at his level, but expects them in the MLB when a pitch comes near a batter’s head.

“Just hot tensions, hit batter hit batter, things get hot and heavy. People get angry, all the emotions come into play,” says Schommer. “When you see the coaches duking it out too that’s a little ridiculous but its baseball, that happens.”

“It showed that passion that MLB players have for the game and how they protect each other and that’s what a true team really is,” says Aaron Modi.

Aaron Modi is a 17-year-old outfielder at Scottsdale Community College. He says he's been taught since high school that the best payback is outplaying the opponent.

“It’s better to just play the game and make up for stuff that happens on the field in the game, rather than with your fists.”

There could be much more drama to come. The D’backs and Dodgers face each other 11 more times this season – Wednesday night and then again at home in Phoenix July 8th through 10th.
