Phoenix woman gets probation for abusing young son

Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix woman has been sentenced to five years of probation for abusing her baby son.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 25-year-old Candice Basilio was given concurrent 5-year sentences Friday for child abuse and attempted child abuse.

Her husband was sentenced last week to six years in prison and lifetime probation for the same charges.

Taylor Jose Basilio was arrested in January 2012 after doctors discovered his 7-week-old son had several broken bones and a fractured skull.

Authorities say Basilio and his wife brought their child to a pediatrician in early December 2011 to receive a flu shot because he had a stuffy nose.

During the visit, the doctor noticed the boy was underweight and had him further evaluated at hospital. That's when the broken bones and skull fracture were discovered.
