Ponce Inlet Police say it is the most vicious beating they've seen in ten years, and it all started with one bad golf shot. A sixty-three year old man is at Halifax Health Medical Center while police look for his brutal attacker.
The attack happened next to the Harbour Village Links Golf Course in Ponce Inlet. Gail Barton was driving down Atlantic Avenue when she saw two men in the grass. She says, "The man on top was literally pummeling the man on the ground."
Police don't know the name of the attacker or where he is now, but they know the victim is 63 year old Richard Fillingame. Investigators say he stopped to talk to the golfer after a golf ball struck his SUV and the golfer attacked him.
Barton says, "He was just beating him. He was really beating him with a vengeance, it was a terrible thing."
Barton honked her horn and the golfer gave her an incredible reaction. She says, "The man jumped up and laughed really loud and just ran up the hillside."
Police say Fillingame was badly beaten in the face and around his head. Detectives are checking security videos. Monday, two people came forward with a good description of the suspect.
People in this quiet beach town cannot believe a bad golf shot could lead to terrible violence. Barton says, "It is hard for me to imagine anyone being that angry."
Fillingame was in stable condition at last check after undergoing some medical procedures Monday afternoon.
