FLORENCE, Ariz. -

A City of Maricopa Police detective has been arrested after he allegedly stole $1,300 while on duty in April.

45-year-old Jose Lizarraga allegedly stole $1,300 and then threw the money out of his department vehicle, according to the Pinal County Attorney's office.

"What happened was there were some irregularities brought to our attention. We shared that with city attorney, they were significant enough they needed to be investigated and we brought the FBI in on that," said Pinal County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Steve Henry.

After PCSO and the FBI "successfully" completed a joint investigation, Lizarraga was arrested and questioned on Tuesday.

He faces charges of fraudulent schemes, forgery, tampering with public records, attempted money laundering and theft.

Lizarraga has been suspended from the force. PCSO says theft by police will not be tolerated.

"There was a $1,300 theft attributed to him. That is small amount of money, but that is not the point. The point is police officers are not supposed to steal," said Henry.

Lizarraga made his first court appearance Wednesday morning. He posted bond.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office cautioned him not to attempt to flee to Mexico, where he apparently has family ties.
