Dust storms can wreak havoc on cars, air conditioners

PHOENIX -

Auto shops around the valley are warning drivers to be extra careful during monsoon season. They're reminding people to check their tire pressure and air filters -- and to take care of other small maintenance work to avoid future trouble.

They also encourage drivers to change out their windshield wipers, especially with monsoon season in full swing.

"We see a lot of brake problems, people don't realize that driving in these water puddles are creating some problems," says Howard Fleischmann of NARPRO.com.

"I recommend highly that people test their brakes after they've gone through a puddle."

It's also important to obey road signs warning of flooded areas to avoid risking a dangerous situation.

Monsoon season can also cause trouble for air conditioners. Dust storms can do major damage, clogging home air filters and causing people to use more electricity during the summer.

It's recommended that people change their air filters monthly to keep the air conditioner working properly.

"If we get some of the dust storms that we've gotten the condensers get extremely dirty," says Mike Donley of Donley Service Center.

"With a clean condenser you can save 5 to 10 percent on electrical costs."

Homeowners are also encouraged to make sure the ductwork on the roof is sealed properly to prevent dust and dirt from entering your home through holes.
