Improvements coming for G train if MTA finds the cash

Improvements coming for G train if MTA finds the cash

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

When it comes to this train, "G" stands for gripes. But there could be hope yet for the 125,000 riders who rely on the route, which connects Brooklyn and Queens.

The MTA released a comprehensive review of the line and issued recommendations, elected officials and rider advocates had long called for.

Among the changes the MTA is recommending: adding 25 percent more trains at rush hour plus adding markers in the stations so that people actually know where the trains will stop to prevent what's called the G train sprint. Because it's a short train with 4 cars, a lot of people end up sprinting to wherever it stops. That could be ending soon.

But all of the changes proposed in the review are contingent upon the MTA finding an additional $700,000. That is why some riders are skeptical the recommendations will become reality.

The group Riders Alliance is giving the MTA the benefit of the doubt.

"The MTA has a strong track record of following through on the recommendations it has on these reviews and we think it's going to happen very soon," said John Raskin of Riders Alliance.

Despite this promising MTA review, one inconvenience won't be going away any time soon, weekend service on the G will continue to be disrupted because of damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
