LILBURN, Ga. -

Witnesses helped police track down the suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a mother and her young daughter in Lilburn.

Maria Cervantes Maldonado and her 6-year-old daughter, Melissa, died on Thursday after police say they were struck by a truck as they walked on the sidewalk along Lawrenceville Highway.

According to the police report, several men advised officers that a white truck that had allegedly hit the two continued on Lawrenceville Highway.

A responding officer noticed two men waving their arms in an attempt to get his attention.

Lilburn police arrested 43-year-old Spencer Prigmore and his female passenger at a check cashing business. The woman was not charged, but Prigmore faces multiple charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide, DUI, hit-and-run.

The report states that when police first made contact with Prigmore he was crying and screaming hysterically, "Oh my God, just tell me did I kill them? Oh my God. Oh my God."

Court records show that Prigmore has been arrested multiple times in Gwinnett County, including a 2009 charge of furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Sheila Tolston, who lives on the same street as Maria Cervantes-Maldonado and her daughter, said the case has affected her.

"My heart goes out to them. I can't imagine losing two people that you care about," said Tolston.

A judge denied bond for Prigmore on Saturday. He remains at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

Funeral plans are pending for the two victims.
