Lardmark Phoenix nursery Gardener's World to close

Known for its beautiful Poinsettia Festival, a valley nursery, a favorite among plant lovers, has announced it's going out of business.

It's the end of an era for Gardener's World.

"It's been fun to be a part of the business just overall growing up in it, you meet so many people."

Kari Petterson has years of memories -- special moments she made spending time right here, a 20 acre lot nestled at the foot of South Mountain.

"Originally we were a grower wholesaler and so we were open basically to builders, landscapers, large firms and as the community grew around us because there really wasn't anything here. Years ago as infield came, we opened up to the community and started garden centers."

Gardener's World was her parents' creation. Gary and Sharon started the business back in 1972 and opened up shop on baseline a short time later.

A scientist, soil expert and horticulturist, gardening was Gary's passion. He passed away this past February.

"He was fantastic I mean that man, he knew everything just about everything," says employee Amelia Morrison.

Amelia Morrison was hired on in 2003. The closing was bittersweet for her as it is for Petterson, who says both financial and personal reasons are behind the decision to close

"Like every business it has its ups and downs and it's a roller coaster as most entrepreneurs know," says Petterson.

Whether you're looking for a blue plumbago or a simple cactus to plant there's still quite a bit of inventory here at Gardener's World. Once this is all gone, the doors will officially close for good.
