WICKENBURG, Ariz. -

Police are investigating after a 13-year-old boy was shot in Wickenburg.

The young boy just turned 13 a week ago.

He was visiting a friend's house when things took a tragic turn.

Police are investigating the shooting as an accident Saturday night, but say there still could be charges filed.

In a home in a quiet Wickenberg community, police say one 13-year-old shot his 13-year-old friend in the head, leaving him in critical condition.

"They're just in shock. It's just a tragedy," said Mike Wallace, a Wickenburg resident.

The homeowner at the house where the shooting happened tells FOX 10 that 13-year-old Brady Baker is on life support.

"Brady was just a neat little kid. He went around on a skateboard and I always tease him about getting haircut," said Wallace.

A skateboard still leaned against a house as residents in a tight-knit community learned what happened.

"My daughter called me crying about 7:15 p.m.--she was staying the night over at a fireman's [home], my daughter and their daughter are friends, she was staying the night over there and they heard it over the police scanner. He had to take the call and go out. That's all she knew, Brady was shot," said Wallace.

Police say Brady was visiting a friend at a home Friday night when the friend's father left to go to the store.

The father reportedly had the gun for protection against a man that had allegedly threatened his daughter.

"That family received some threats and the father decided to leave the weapon with the son and a visitor," said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Police are investigating how the young boy was shot, but right now are calling the shooting an accident.

"We're looking at possible criminal charges, maybe against father, and shooter that is the progress right now by detectives," said Arpaio.

"It just makes me want to hug my kids a little tighter tonight," said Wallace.

Maricopa County Sheriff's office hasn't confirmed the names of the victim or shooter with FOX10.

Police do not believe there was any foul play involved.
