Football star's death evokes painful memories for paralyzed player

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

The death of DeAntre Turman brought back memories to the family of a man paralyzed in a high school game back in 2007.

Turman, a Creekside High player, died after suffering a neck injury in a preseason game on Friday. The tragedy reminded Arquevious Crane and his family of the last time he played football.

"To see them talking about it brings back so many memories and so many hurts," said Barbara Crane, Arquevious' grandmother.

While playing for South Gwinnett High School six years ago, Arquevious Crane suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed.

"I caught a pass, running for yards, trying to get a first down, pushing forward and not going down on initial contact, and as I was going down...things just started slowing down for me," he said.

"When he was laying on that field face down, couldn't move, you know he was telling me, 'Grandma, I'm alright. Grandma, stop crying, I'm alright,'" said his grandmother.

Despite his injuries, Crane says he accepts the risks that came with the sport.

"There's only so much you can do with the game of football. It's a physical sport," Crane said.

Arquevious says he still loves watching the game.  However, his grandmother says after what happened to him on the field, she ca no longer bear to watch football.

"If I had this to do all over again, I would do everything in my power from playing football. I really would," Barbara Crane said.

Arquevious sees it differently and wouldn't discourage his children from playing ball.

"I wouldn't restrict them from anything if they want to do it. I'd let them know what I went through and hopefully that'll shape their decisions," said Arquevious Crane.

Arquevious expects to complete college in the next year and plans to go to law school.

Arquevious and his grandmother say the Turman family is in their prayers.
