MVD office closed after officer is assaulted

Posted: Updated:

Several Phoenix Police officers were assaulted when they tried to take a man into custody at the Motor Vehicle Department building at 2nd Street and Olympus.

Officers were first called to the scene Tuesday afternoon on reports that a man and woman were trying to change the title on a motorcycle that had been stolen.

The officers were questioning them and their responses weren't adding up, so they decided to detain the pair.

As they were trying to handcuff the man, he struggled and fought with officers, and even bit them. Witnesses say he was trying to grab ahold of their service weapons or Tasers. Meanwhile, the woman escaped.

Eventually, he was stopped and taken into custody. The suspect and the officers were transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

A gun was found in the suspects' car.

The MVD office was closed for the investigation.
