BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (WJBK) -

A suburban Detroit congressman says it would be a "dream come true" to seek the impeachment of President Barack Obama but says he lacks evidence of crimes to back such a move.

Republican U.S. Rep. Kerry Bentivolio of Milford made the comment to supporters in Birmingham on Monday. The talk was posted Tuesday on YouTube.

In response to a woman's question about impeaching the president, Bentivolio says he wishes he could submit an impeachment bill.

He tells her he feels her pain about Obama because he "stood 12 feet away from the guy" and "couldn't stand being there."

Bentivolio says it's his job to respect the office of the presidency and says anyone who seeks his impeachment without evidence would "become a laughing stock."

Bentivolio did, however, admit that he's gone as far as to meet with lawyers to help figure out what would be needed to begin the impeachment process.

State Democratic Chairman Lon Johnson said Wednesday that the statement shows that Bentivolio would "rather wage tired ideological political battles and give us more Washington dysfunction" than help create jobs for the middle class.

Conversation:

Woman: Who is going to stop Obama from everything that he is doing against our Constitution? He needs to be stopped.

Bentivolio: Articles of impeachment?

Woman:
Yes. It should have been started a long, long time ago and it hasn't been started yet and I'm getting very nervous. And I need to know who and when is somebody finally going to draw up something that's going to stop this runaway train that we have in the White House.

Bentivolio:
If I could write that bill, it would be a dream come true. I feel your pain. I stood 12 feet away from the guy and listened to him. And I couldn't stand being there. But because he is president, I have to respect the office. That's my job. I respect the office.
