DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Detroit's Karmanos Cancer Institute has launched a free app it hopes will help thousands of doctors and patients find an appropriate cancer clinical trial.

The iPhone and iPad application is primarily designed for doctors who are searching for clinical trials for patients who are not responding to standard cancer treatment. "It is important that physicians are familiar with new treatment options available through our Clinical Trials Program at the Karmanos Cancer Institute," Connie Claybaker, associate center director, Research Administration, Karmanos Cancer Institute said in a release.

However patients or their families can also use the app to find the latest possible cancer treatment options. In the past 12 months Karmanos has begun nearly 325 clinical trials.

Additional features include buttons to call and email Karmanos Cancer Institute directly, information about Phase I studies  offered and links to National Cancer Institute resources about cancer.

The KCI Trials app is now available for download on the App Store and an Android version is expected to be available by early 2014.
