Rally Outside SRC Meeting, Protests Over Philly School Funding

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A sea of red marched from City Hall to the Philadelphia School District building, in another attempt to have their voices heard before school starts on September 9th.

"All this bicker back and forth really doesn't get anything solved. How are you going to fund Philadelphia public schools? not just partially at 50 mill or 100 million or 300 million, but completely, where the teachers don't have to provide supplies," says a teacher.

Parents, teachers and concerned community members are fed up with the district's money problems. They're also fed up with the most recent decision to open schools with the bare minimum. 7th grade math teacher Levarr Dixon is outraged.

"Without vice principals, without inadequate counselors, half the teachers being shuffled around the district because schools have been closed," he describes.

The rally was held to call on Governor Corbett to better fund Philadelphia schools and for Mayor Nutter to press the state harder to do it.

"Teachers, kids, parents, we cannot do our jobs without the resources that we need. Governor Corbett knows it and Nutter needs to fight harder for us," says Amy Roat.

Inside, people spoke with passion before the school reform commission, saying that the recently secured 50 million dollars isn't enough.

"Stand up for adequate funding for the district. Demand 100 mill from city council, 45 from state, further pursue the cigarette tax and other funding to provide adequate education to the children of Philadelphia. And solution isn't to cut teachers because they are the only ones who do care a whole lot," says Romick Powell.

Amy Roat has been teaching in the district for 20 years, she's worried about the future of children in the city.

"I'm scared. I'm kind of sad that I'm not going to be able to do the best that I can do. I'm looking forward to seeing my students. I'm hoping we can do the very best we can," says Amy Roat.
