Feldman's view: Take care of these new emergency vehicles

Posted: Updated:

We've been telling you they were coming for months. Today, the City of Detroit was parading out the first wave of brand new EMS rigs and police cruisers on Woodward Avenue.

The vehicles come with an $8 million donation from the business community.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing helped welcome the 10 ambulances and 15 police cruisers during a ceremony earlier today.

The remaining 13 EMS units are being outfitted and are expected to hit the streets before the end of the year. A total of 100 police cruisers will eventually be added.

And so today we get a batch of new vehicles to beef up the city fleet.

Will it matter?

It's my view that it hasn't before.

This is an issue that has been with us for nearly 40 years. We've blown it before, lets not do it again.

This time, the new vehicles are a gift from the business community. We owe it to them to never go back an re-trace these embarrassing steps of asking for free vehicles to keep our people safe.

Here's a shocker for you: My very first day on the job here in Detroit was at this television station on December 6th, 1976.

My first assignment was to go downtown and take pictures of Mayor Coleman Young, because he was taking delivery of a new fire truck.

I asked, why is that a big story in this big of a city?

My bosses said, because the fire trucks are breaking down and the city can't get to the fires in time.

Sound familiar?

Back in December of 1976, they told this new reporter... "Here's how you should end your story. Telling the people that things are getting better, because they are."

They were that day, and they are today. But will they be tomorrow?

We should have learned something in nearly 4 decades.

Let's hope that we finally did.
