I-Team: U.S. Post Office warns of phony, fake e-mail scam

Posted: Updated:

An alert from FOX 5's I-Team about a new scam e-mail making the rounds. This time you might think you're getting an e-mail from the U.S. Post Office. Not quite.

Some postal customers are receiving bogus e-mails about a package delivery or online postage
charges. The e-mails contain a link or attachment that, when opened, installs a malicious virus that can steal personal information from your PC.

The e-mails claim to be from the U.S. Postal Service and contain fraudulent information about
an attempted or intercepted package delivery or online postage charges. You are instructed to
click on a link , open the attachment, or print the label.

But Postal Inspectors warn: Don't do it!

Like most viruses sent by e-mail, clicking on the link or opening the attachment will activate a virus that can steal information—such as your user name, password, and financial account information.

What to do? Simply delete the message without taking any further action. The Postal Inspection Service is working hard to resolve the issue and shut down the malicious program.

If you have questions about a delivery or wish to report spam, please call 1-800-ASK-USPS or
email spam@uspis.gov.

Developer: Kenerly never asked for bribe

    Wednesday, August 20 2014 10:18 PM EDT2014-08-21 02:18:28 GMT
Prosecutors considered him their key witness, a longtime Gwinnett developer given immunity to spill what he knew about corruption inside county government. David Jenkins testified before a Gwinnett grand jury in 2010. He also met multiple times with prosecutors. Those interviews were videotaped. Four years later, prosecutors agreed to a no contest plea bargain with former commissioner Kevin Kenerly on one count of bribery. He will serve 10 years on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.

Oh, that awful feeling when you think your credit or debit card is safely tucked into your wallet, but it's still shopping. Somebody, somewhere has got your card number and is using it. What if you could turn off that card?
