Storms slam city of Surprise

Rain started falling across the valley Friday night, but it was the city of Surprise that seems to have gotten slammed the hardest.

Rain gauges there filled up past two inches.

Tina England Gutierrez was excited to wake up to wet weather falling from the morning skies, but the rain came with strong winds and loads of lightning.

"It was crazy, we woke up to a loud bang and that was kinda not nice," said Kristen Wright.

Wright woke up to the bang of thunder and realized a home in her neighborhood was hit by lightning near Cotton Lane and Bell Road.

"We saw the smoking out of the house, we saw actually flames coming out of the top of the house. My mom right away said, 'Call 911 right now'," said Wright.

"We've had lightning in strikes where they've resulted in house fires so we're ready when it happens," said Surprise Fire Captain Jesus Rivera.

Rivera says no one was inside the home.

It was actually just sold Friday to a new owner, according to neighbors.

Everyone agrees it's a blessing that the wicked weather hit a home with no one inside.

"Very lucky that it wasn't my house, very lucky," said Wright.

It's a reminder that when weather warnings are issued, they need to be taken seriously.
