NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Saturday afternoon was the ‘unofficial’ kickoff to the U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium as the First lady took part in the festivities to help lead her anti-obesity "Let's Move" campaign.

“I think everyone should definitely join this campaign,” said one attendee.

“It gets them to exercise and eat healthy,” added another.

“You have to really take care of yourself, workout and eat well and keep those muscles going.”

Hundreds of thousands of people will attend the U.S. Open in the coming week but on this day, it was all about the kids -- with a focus on staying active.

John Kearny brought his son Justin.

“Start early, eat healthy stay in shape and you’ll live a lot longer.”

In addition to promoting the healthy eating and activity, First Lady Michelle Obama also touted the U.S. Tennis Association’s efforts to build thousands of new courts across the country and train new coaches.

"That's really what ‘Let's Move’ is all about. It's about helping kids across this country get active and feel healthy and learn the skills that you all are going to need to succeed not just in school but in life. You're going to learn things like hard work, team work discipline. That's why playing sports is so important," said Obama.

“It’s a very historic day overall.”

Sheena Ba and her daughter also happy to hear from the First Lady on the same day as the 50th anniversary of the civil rights march on Washington.

“We’re so very proud and happy that we’ve made it this far and that we have Michelle Obama come and speak to us – it’s a great day,” said Bra.

Her 12-year-old is an up and coming tennis player and understands the message.

"It’s really important stay healthy and eat right.”

A formula for a successful life.
