Authorities say an off-duty Detroit police officer fatally shot a suspected carjacker early Monday outside a Southfield apartment complex.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. at the Sutton Place Apartments in the 23000 block of Riverside Dr., near 9 Mile Road and Lahser.

Police say the officer was getting out of his Dodge Charger when he was approached by two armed suspects. "Fearing for his safety, he fired several round and struck one suspect," said Southfield Lt. Nick Louissa.

Police say the suspect, a 17-year-old male, died at the scene. His identity has not been released.

Police say a second suspect fled on foot and was later apprehended, along with a third suspect believed to be involved in the attempted carjacking. Both are 16 years old and could face charges as early as Tuesday.

The victims's identity was not released.

Police say the off-duty officer is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
