Monroe Area High student hit, killed near school

MONROE, Ga. -

Authorities say a 16-year-old Monroe Area High School student was killed when he was struck by three different cars on his walk to school Tuesday.  The teen had run out into the road to get his skateboard, and that's when he was hit.

The accident happened less than a mile away from Monroe Area High School, which is located at 300 Double Springs Church Road.  Authorities say Jacob Little, a freshman, missed his school bus and decided to walk to school instead.

Authorities say Little had his skateboard with him and was riding it when it slipped out from under his feet and shot into Double Springs Church Road near North Broad Street. When he went into the street to get it, authorities say Little was hit three times by vehicles traveling in both directions.  First, he was struck by what witnesses describe as a gray or silver Honda sedan, then by a Ford Ranger, and finally by Chevy Tahoe.  Police said only the driver of the Ford Ranger stopped after the accident.

Police said late Tuesday, the driver of the last car to hit Little-- the Tahoe-- contacted them to say that in the dark, he thought he had hit a deer.  He will not face charges.  Authorities say the driver of the Honda will be charged once the person is found.

They say the Honda may have damage to its front end, and it's unlikely the driver was not  aware they had hit something.

One local resident told FOX 5 that the stretch of Double Springs Church Road where the accident happened is fast-paced and known to be dangerous.

Anyone with information regarding the Honda sedan involved in the accident is asked to call either the Walton County Sheriff's Office at (770) 267-6557 or the Georgia State Patrol in Monroe at (706) 343-5870. You may also call 911.

A fund has been established for those who would like to make donations to the cost of Jacob's funeral services.  Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank location.
