Veteran Robbed And Taped To Chair By Two Guys He Tried To Help

Posted: Updated:

An Indiana veteran says he was trying to be friendly, instead, he got robbed. To make matters worse, he was duct-taped to a chair as the robbery happened.

79-year old Billy Blankenship didn't want to show his face on TV. But he agreed to tell us about when two robbers left him duct taped to the chair for four hours.

"I couldn't even move," Blankenship says. "I can't say anything good about them."

He had just finished the yard on Sunday evening, when two guys approached him, asking for work. He said he didn't have any work, but he could offer them a cold drink. But once they got inside, that's when they struck.

"He got me in a hammer lock, not a hammer lock, but some kind of wrestling hold around the neck," Blankenship says. Then the two robbers sat Billy in the chair.

"And they wrapped me all up in this duct tape. To where, I mean he had it all the way up to [my neck]," Blankenship says.

With Billy taped to the chair, the men rifled through the house, they took cash, jewelry, Billy's Smith and Wesson and his Buick, parked outside.

And then they left Billy, still taped up.

"But it stuck pretty good," Blankenship says. It took him four hours to finally get one hand free. He then got the scissors on the table.

"And I got them, maneuvered around to where I could cut the tape off. And I cut a piece at a time," Blankenship says. Then he called his neighbor, who called police, and his niece Judy.

"Hopefully with all that duct tape, there's going to be some fingerprints," says Judy Rossman.

Billy says he'll give anyone a first chance. But to the two guys who robbed him and left him stranded?

"I think I'd say... if you ever come back again, I'll kill ya," Blankenship says.

Aside from the duct tape, one of the suspects left a digital scale on the floor. Police hope to be able to pull some fingerprints from it too.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
