More Arrests In Bensalem School District Corruption Case

BENSALEM, Pa. -

More arrests, in the theft and corruption case involving the Bensalem School District.

Seven people turned themselves in today, bringing the total now to 27. Police say this scheme cost taxpayers more than a million dollars.

Teresa Adams, Richard Bolinski, Stephen Leonardo, Paul Krex, William O'Hara Jr., Bruce Binder, Frances Zemartis.

They're the latest arrests in an 18-month-long investigation into the Bensalem Township School District.

"Some of these individuals were filling up gas cans and taking out for personal use," says Fred Harran of the Bensalem Township Police Department.

Police say that the gas theft went on for more than five years, totaling more than $35,000.

"Another individual was also getting automotive supplies from the district for own personal vehicles as well as other items," Harran adds.

And there was also a custodian accused of stealing anything that was nailed down.

"She was taking stuffed animals, school supplies, lamp filing cabinets. If she could walk out the door with it, she walked out the door with it," describes Harran.

This is all on top of what police revealed from the other 20 arrests back in February, the so-called "ghost employees" who they say never showed up for work. Managers looked the other way and got paid anyway. There was also the $500,000 in theft from the bus garage.

But a relative of one of the suspects, who asked we not identify her, says her loved one was unfairly targeted.

"These guys still have their jobs and I think the ones who were fired are coming after these guys," she says. "Now he's got to worry about a lawyer. He's got a family to keep a home to keep. It's just not fair."

And those arrested today were charged with theft and conspiracy. Meanwhile, the 20 people arrested in February took plea deals and were sentenced to community service and ordered to pay restitution.
