Mother Responds to Hateful Letter Aimed At Autistic Son

Posted: Updated:

A few weeks ago, Fox 29 brought you the story of a Toronto mother who received a downright disturbing letter regarding her autistic son.

The letter was from a neighbor who told her to euthanize her son!

Now, we are hearing from that mother.

The mother of that 13-year-old boy is offering some "words of wisdom" in response to that letter.

Her main message is about the importance of tolerance and understanding.

44-year-old Karla Begley says she was distraught after reading that letter from her neighbor about her son, Max.  But, it wasn't just about Max.     Begley has another son who is 15-years-old and also has a form of autism and she has multiple sclerosis, and is wheelchair-bound.

Despite all of this, Begley looks on the bright side.     She wrote a touching letter to a blog called "Love That Max," calling her son a "blessing."

She also said she won't stoop to an insulting level over the letter and people need to have tolerance, acceptance and respect for children with special needs.

In that disturbing letter, the angry neighbor complained about the noises Max makes to which Begley said "All children make noise, not just ones with special needs."

She also said it's important to help other children understand what autism is and not to be afraid of children with autism.

Many people in the neighbor have come out in support of Max and his family.

If the writer of the letter ever comes forward Max's family says they plan to press charges.
