DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -
Getting to and from school should be the last thing a child has to worry about. But in neighborhoods all across Detroit children are forced to walk past vacant lots and abandoned homes, just to get an education.
And that's why employees from GM are stepping up and partnering with the Brightmoor neighborhood to make it easier for their children to get to school safely. "We want them to see that change is possible" said "teamGm Cares" Coordinator Sabin Blake.
He's among the hundreds of GM employees who spent their day in Brightmoor, clearing lots and boarding up houses near Gompers School. And they weren't working alone.
Deborah Andrews lives in this neighborhood and serves on the board of the Brightmoor Alliance.
She put together a group of people from the neighborhood determined to work side by side with the GM volunteers. The Brightmoor clean up is one of more than 75 service projects happening across the country as part of "teamGM Cares" week. "We're happy to do it and happy to be part of the community," said Blake.
And people like Deborah are determined to make sure the work continues, long after the volunteers are gone.
