SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A Seminole County man is charged with child abuse after investigators said he pushed a 12-year-old boy into a canal. Deputies said it happened after a fight over a can of soda.

Bradford Ward has been charged with cruelty toward a child and abuse of a child.  A relative told FOX 35 the Ward family didn't want to comment, but the victim's family said they're horrified.

Marshall Knott, 12, can't believe how angry a quick sip of soda on a hot day seems to have made his neighbor.

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office said  the pre-teen went to Bradford Ward's home on Canal Street in Sanford with a group of friends. Knott said they went there to cut Ward's grass.

"Brad woke up and told [my friend] to get a coke," said Knott. "I thought he said I could get a coke. I got one. I was drinking it sitting down, went out to mow, and Brad came out yelling."

Knott was standing close to the canal. The Sheriff's report said Ward then pushed the child in the water.

"I got up, hit my toe on the rock," said Knott.

According to the police report, Ward then grabbed a piece of wood and tried to hit the child. Knott said he then ran home.

"I told my mom and dad," said Knott.

"He was scared," said Robert Knott, Marshall's father. "He was shaking."

Knott's father Robert said he tried to confront Ward.

"I couldn't talk to him, and the police came and they couldn't really talk to him," said Robert Knott.

Robert Knott said he couldn't talk to Ward because he was violently yelling at him.

The Sheriff's report said Ward did the same with the responding deputy cursing at him while admitting he pushed the child in the water.
