A Federal Aviation Administration advisory panel is planning this week to suggest a big decrease in restrictions on the use of electronic devices by airplane passengers during takeoff and landings, according to a report.

Under the new recommendations, The Daily Mail reports passengers would be allowed to use their devices in "airplane mode" to read e-books, listen to music and watch videos.

Passengers would still be prohibited from using their electronics for anything requiring a data connection, such as phone calls and texting.

The policy is expected to come into effect next year.
