Playground Shooting Leaves One Dead

Playground Shooting Leaves One Dead

Posted: Updated:

Police investigators are collecting evidence from a playground shooting that left a 45-year-old West Oak Lane man dead.

Police say it was just before when the man was gunned down on the morris estate playgrounds. It happened in front of kids and parents just feet from the jungle gyms.

"There were young mothers who have very young children under the age of 10 some fewer than 5 that were playing on the playground," Chief Inspector Scott Smalls of the Philadelphia Police said.

Police said the man was shot multiple times in the chest, back and shoulders. The man has not been officially identified, but family friends tells us he was lifelong residents of West Oak Lane.

"I grew up with the family for over 50 years. They were like our sisters and brothers. That's how close they were, " neighbor Brian Coleman said.

Coleman told us the victim's mother happened to be at his house helping his family grieve the loss of his father.

"She was over our house and consoling us. Then she gets a knock on our door saying her son has been shot."

Now a neighborhood is wondering why the victim was targeted and why the gunman chose playground filled with children to commit murder.

There is still no suspect or motive in the shooting.

This is a second tragic loss for this family. Friends tell us the victim's stepfather was one of three firefighters who died in the high-rise fire at One Meridian Plaza back in 1991.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
