Pinal County Sheriff's Office holds active shooter exercise

SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. -

Today Pinal County Sheriff's deputies took part in a real-life scenario in San Tan Valley. They had to respond to Poston Butte High School as if an active shooter was inside.

We do want to warn you everyone is acting, but the video looks very real.

From the outside it looked like a normal day for high schoolers, but on the inside a terrifying scenario was unfolding.

Sheriff Paul Babeu wanted to present a situation as real as possible in case his deputies ever have to respond to this type of tragedy.

"They didn't wait outside they immediately came in and they went to where they heard gunfire. As other deputies and officers showed up, they would also attack the threat wherever they see it," said Sheriff Paul Babeu.

Deputies entered as if there were an active shooter inside, even running past actors who appeared to have suffered traumatic injuries or were dead.

"We have not just our deputies, we have hundreds of actors. We have 150 student actors, 30 teachers."

"It was terrifying. Even though it was a drill it was still terrifying," said student actor, Victoria Vasquez.

"Everything happened so quickly. Within minutes you heard the sirens going, outside police fire responding entering the building, it was handled quickly, swiftly, professionally," said Tara Walter of the Florence Unified School District.

Firefighters, paramedics and hospitals also participated. They loaded patients onto gurneys while deputies went classroom to classroom searching for the shooter.

Even the dispatchers played along.

"We can either put our heads in the sand and say it will never happen here, and maybe it won't, or we can be prepared. Then if it ever happens we're ready to respond," said Babeu.

For PCSO, responding to a priority one crisis takes 2 and a half to 3 and a half minutes.
