Wheelchair-bound man beaten, police ask for tips

PHOENIX -

Pure evil -- that's how police are describing a vicious attack on a 78-year-old man who's confined to a wheelchair. Police are desperate for the public's help in finding the attackers.

We spoke with the man, who survived the beating.

"They were killing me. I'm a tough old bird," said victim John Gregory.

78-year-old John Gregory can barely talk.

"Tried to fight back but…"

But he knew there was no way he could take on three guys. They came into his lawnmower shop around 8 o'clock Friday night and did this to him -- leaving half of his face black and bruised.

"Come over here and started beating on me, went through my drawer, got the cash out of here. About $200."

There aren't any surveillance cameras on this building or across the street, so police have zero leads. That's why they're asking the public for help. They're looking for anyone who might've seen three Hispanic guys running out this door Friday night.

"It absolutely breaks my heart that there's someone out that could come in here and do something like this when he posed absolutely no threat," said Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.

Police say this man is lucky to be alive.

"Yes he is strong and we're glad that he survived this but now we need to bring to justice that evil that walked in the door that night and did this to him."

John Gregory lives and works in this shop by himself. But he's a fighter, and says if anyone else tries to rob or hurt him again, he's ready to fight back.
