Friends, family gather to remember missing veteran

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -

Family and friends of a missing veteran gathered Friday night to remember him. Andrew Ackerman's family had hopes that he would be found safe, but his body was discovered late Thursday night in a ditch not far from a Buckhead bar where he was last seen.

A candlelight vigil was held at the apartment complex where Ackerman was trying to start a new life before his was tragically cut short.  The Army veteran was last seen hanging out with friends in Buckhead early Tuesday.  Then, he disappeared—seemingly into thin air.

On Thursday evening, friends desperate for answers posted missing persons fliers around the area.  Around the same time, authorities discovered Ackerman's body in his car along Johnson's Ferry Road near Sandy Springs.

Ackerman was a 2001 graduate of South Forsyth High School.  From there, he went on to serve his country for more than a decade.  He did two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.  In the Army, he had been a helicopter technician.  Friends say he was transitioning to become an auto technician while earning a living working at a Buckhead bar near where he disappeared.
